Developing a continuously recording ECG device presented the challenge of designing a device that is both compact and energy-efficient. The goal was to extend the wear time and significantly improve comfort compared to existing solutions. The requirements for miniaturization and energy efficiency were particularly critical.

Efficient Design and Development of a Long-Term ECG Prototype

Our approach focused on developing a compact ECG device the size of a USB stick that is easy and comfortable to wear. The device was designed to record comprehensive ECG data through three channels and achieve a runtime of more than three days. This was accomplished by selecting energy-efficient components and implementing smart data compression techniques. A specially developed AI model enables automatic analysis of ECG data for early detection of heart diseases.

Concept Design & Idea Management

  • Research and Testing of Modern Technologies: Investigation and testing of innovative technologies suitable for the development of the ECG device.
  • User Stories and System Requirements: Development and documentation of requirements based on user needs.
  • Integration of Energy-Efficient Components: Selection and integration of components that enable multi-day measurement.
  • Development of a Neural Network: Creation of a neural network for analyzing ECG data based on datasets from the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt.

 

Prototyping & Testing

  • Circuit Diagram and PCB Layout: Creation and development of the circuit diagram and PCB layout for the prototype hardware.
  • Testing and Documentation: Conducting and documenting extensive tests with the prototype hardware.
  • Data Compression and AI Implementation: Compression and integration of the neural network into the embedded system.

Results

Compact Long-Term ECG for Comfortable Monitoring

The developed concept for the ECG device enables precise long-term monitoring with three channels and stands out due to its compact size and high comfort. The device can continuously record for over three days and, thanks to the integrated AI technology, offers automatic detection of heart diseases.

The innovative long-term ECG device sets new standards in medical technology with its USB stick size and integrated AI, providing comfortable, multi-day heart monitoring with high energy efficiency.
