Quantitative Assessment of the ADAS Control Unit for ASIL B
The project focused on analyzing a Lidar control unit intended for use in the ADAS environment. The required safety goal was assigned ASIL B(D), which was broken down to ASIL B metrics by the OEM. An FMEDA was used to determine the values for the control unit and, if necessary, to develop improvement suggestions for the concept and safety mechanisms. Several prototypes were analyzed iteratively, and the concept was optimized until all requirements were met.
Solution Implemented
Strategic Guidance for ASIL B Metrics
Strategic Guidance for ASIL B Metrics
First, a complete FMEDA was created using SN29500 values, manufacturer data, and standard configurations for complex components. Initially, the target metrics for ASIL B were not met. As a response, detailed analyses for the mentioned complex components (including an SOC and a µC) were conducted and configured. Additional safety mechanisms in hardware and software were recommended and developed with the development teams. Gradually, the concept was improved, and all changes were implemented in the analysis throughout the project.
System Engineering Department
- System requirements were considered for the analysis
Implementation & Development
- Initial creation of FMEDA for the B-prototype hardware
- Identification of weaknesses in the concept
- Consulting on the design of new safety mechanisms
- Detailed analyses for complex hardware components (SOC, µC, PMIC, etc.)
- Revision of FMEDA for C and D prototypes
- Ongoing project reporting
Results
ASIL B Metrics for the Final Hardware Prototype
Safety Concept Exceeded Through our collaboration, we successfully identified weaknesses in the safety concept and the control unit hardware. At the same time, the hardware developers benefited from our expertise to better understand and implement their safety mechanisms. The target metrics were exceeded with the measures we developed, generating additional potential for other project functions.
Identification and Avoidance of Critical Hardware Failures
During the analysis, critical hardware failures were identified and avoided through improved and safer hardware design, along with the implementation of safety mechanisms recommended by us.
