Challenges
Integration of ADAS Functions and Safety Standards
Development of various ADAS platform functions on an ECU while complying with ISO 26262.
One challenge was managing the complex ADAS platform landscape, where different functions from SAE Level 0-3 coexist and communicate on a single control unit while adhering to safety standards. Another challenge was maintaining cybersecurity awareness, aligning cybersecurity and safety to ensure the platform was both safe and secure.

Defining Requirements and Modeling Architectures
Defining Requirements and Modeling Architectures
Our solution involved following our innovative top-down approach, where we developed our system within a predefined road route scenario. Additionally, the operational design domain of the system was defined. The various functions were developed as a system, with safety analyses and item definitions created for the entire system. Furthermore, use case diagrams, as well as functional, logical, and physical architectures and requirements for each function, were developed. The functional safety concept and technical safety concept were created, with regular alignment meetings held with cybersecurity. In the end, a functional architecture of the ECU was developed to integrate all functions and ensure traceability to each function.
Concept Design & Idea Management
- Creation and documentation of Item Definition, including use case diagrams, road route scenarios, and the operational design domain
- Creation and documentation of HARA
Implementation & Development
- Creation and documentation of the Functional Architecture and Functional Requirements for each ADAS function
- Creation and documentation of the Logical Architecture and Logical Requirements for each ADAS function
- Creation and documentation of the Physical Architecture and Physical Requirements for each ADAS function
- Creation and documentation of the System Context Diagram and Lifecycle Phases
- Creation and documentation of safety analyses (FTA, FMEA)
- Creation and documentation of the Functional Safety Concept and the associated safety mechanisms
- Creation and documentation of the Technical Safety Concept and the associated safety mechanisms
- Creation and documentation of the ECU Functional Architecture, Functional Requirements, and traceability to the system level
Results
ECU Architecture for ADAS: From Concept to Basic Development
Through our collaboration, we successfully developed an ECU functional architecture for various functions of the ADAS platform from scratch, starting with the concept phase. This created a foundation for further development at the hardware and software levels.
This approach enabled a high level of reusability of the work products for individual functions, together, or with different configurations.
