Security features activation design for a HW-only product
With the hardware component of an autonomous driving control system being delivered, the client required that all supplied parts be shipped with all software features activated. This presented a significant challenge in managing the acquisition of security objects from the OEM, injecting these security objects, and executing the correct activation procedures, all while lacking control or ownership of the product software.

Our solution was to create a manufacturing security design that handles needs of four stakeholders simultaneously – client OEM, product SW supplier, secure operations centre supplier and Veoneer manufacturing team, with maximum permitted automation achieved between systems of each stakeholder within manufacturing process flow and availability constraints.
Implementation & Development
- Design of End-of-Line command sequences for security objects injection and activation of security features in the supplier product
- Risk assessment of production line equipment and manufacturing IT infrastructure
- Support in the creation of standardized manufacturing security controls
- Design of interfaces between IT systems of manufacturing stakeholders
Cybersecurity Management
- Management of communication and responsibility allocation between manufacturing security stakeholders
- Planning of manufacturing cybersecurity activities in coordination with stakeholders
- Creation of a security design-for-manufacturing process incorporating best practices and lessons learned from the project
Results
Introduction of Manufacturing Security Process
While the dissolution of the product software supplier led to the product not reaching full production, our assistance enabled the establishment of a framework for effectively managing security design in manufacturing for future projects, and improved the overall security posture of the manufacturing lines.
Our designs have enhanced the implementation speed and process control of manufacturing security engineering activities, resulting in reduced dependence on highly specialized engineers in a field with a significant shortage of available talent.
