Management and Concepts for Functional Safety

The challenge in this project was to develop a 360° Lidar sensor, initially used as a prototype and not in a safety-critical context, to comply with ASIL B standards and transition it into safe series production. This involved adapting and continuously improving the development process according to ISO 26262, as well as equipping the product with a concept that met ASIL requirements. The development scope included concept creation, conducting a supporting analysis, and managing all safety activities within the project.

The first step towards a safe sensor involved informing all relevant domains about the functional safety requirements and documenting these in the development-supporting Safety Plan. Through continuous consulting with both the HW and SW development areas, as well as the testing and production departments, the process was progressively adapted and improved

During concept creation and analysis of the existing product, both the HW architecture and HW/SW implementation were adjusted to meet safety requirements. The preliminary creation of the system architecture and accompanying system analysis supported a systematic approach toward a safety-compliant Lidar sensor for the automotive sector.

Concept Design & Idea Management

  • Alignment of safety goals and requirements with the OEM

  • Creation and implementation of functional and technical safety concepts in accordance with ISO 26262 and derivation of requirements for HW and SW
  • Quantitative analysis of the system concept to achieve ASIL B metrics

Implementation & Development

  • Consulting and support for implementing technical safety requirements in hardware and software
  • Consulting and review of the test concept for verification and validation of the safety concept and associated implementation

Safety Management According to ISO 26262

  • Support in adapting the development process to ISO 26262
  • Planning and documentation of all safety activities in coordination with project management and project teams
  • Consulting on the safety-compliant integration of the development process into a new Product Management System (PMS)
  • Conducting and moderating development-supporting audits and assessments

Results

ISO 26262 Compliant Development Process and Safety Concept for the 360° Lidar Sensor With our support, a new product management system for ISO 26262 compliant development was successfully introduced within the project and company-wide. All domains involved in the development were able to implement safety standard requirements effectively through our consulting. Our safety concept and analysis for the sensor laid the foundation for implementing new concepts in the area of safe 360° Lidar sensors.  

Our safety concept has significantly enhanced the development of 360° Lidar sensors, contributing to the future safe deployment of the technology in autonomous systems and the ADAS sector.
